The Theatre of Tennessee Williams: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof/Orpheus Descending/Suddenly Last Summer
Published in Paperback by New Directions Publishing (September, 1991)
Author: Tennessee Williams
Average review score:

THRILLING
In the history of theatre, I am sure that future generations will find that Tennessee Williams was the one playwright who not only wrote of the neuroses and souls of his fellow Americans, but did so with extraordinary beauty and grace.

In this collection one can find three of his most famous plays, two of which, unhappily, do not seem to be revived very often. So although it is always better to SEE a play rather than READ it, that may not be very easy.

"Orpheus Descending" deserves to be rediscovered--a highly poetic, gothic horror story of the battle between art, spirit, soul and sensuality, sexuality. Originally written for the brilliant Italian actress, Anna Magnani, it was in fact played on Broadway by the equally brilliant American, Maureen Stapleton.

"Suddenly Last Summer" was actually the basis for a very long, very self-conscious study I did for a college psych. class. Here in one of Williams most "symbol-laden" plays is his cry for an unfeeling world to accept human beings with all their faults (BECAUSE of all their faults, perhaps?) told through the disturbing memories of a woman whose family wants those memories shut up at any cost.

All three movie versions of these plays are faithful to the originals UP TO A POINT. Try to see the plays, but if that is impossible do yourself a favor: read all of Williams, including his poetry and short stories, and start with this thrilling volume of 3 of his best plays. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You won't be disappointed OR bored with this volume
The three choices for this volume fit very well together. All three include themes that are so often covered in Williams' work. Bizarre family situations, unrequitted love and battles within the self are portrayed, often brutally, in these works. For example, the struggle experienced by "Maggie the Cat" in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" is a raw blend of self hatred, self love, longing for what can't be mixed with a fearsome attempt of "keeping up appearances" within the confines of a, to say the least, very unhealthy extended family situation. I think another fine example of Williams' flair for the, shall we say extraordinary, is "Suddenly Last Summer." It's not easily described without giving away many shockers so I won't spoil that here. I highly recommend this volume as the two I just mentioned are absolutely fantastic. Also, don't ever pass up the chance of seeing the film versions of these (I speak of the originals in this case).

Review of A Three-Turtle Sumer
Reading 'A Three Turtle Summer' is a learning and rewarding experience. The author conveys very clearly - yet with measured tact - the insidiousness of discrimination and prejudice, namely towards minority women. Janelle Meraz Hooper's dialogues are witty and her characters are convincing. Hers is a moving portrayal of one woman's resolve to conquer herself, against all odds. This is a warm, unassuming and memorable story with no frills attached. I loved it!

Review of Three-Turtle Summer
Set in Oklahoma in 1949, A Three-Turtle Summer offers a revealing view of the hard life of a Hispanic military wife and her daughter on Fort Sill's military base. Married to a post World War Two soldier that was raised with the mindset that physical and mental abuse are natural means by which to establish control over one's wife, Grace, the primary character slowly develops a plan to escape the constant beatings she endures.
Grace creates a secret life unknown to her husband as she attempts to cope with her circumstances and protect her daughter.
A Three-Turtle Summer is not only a fascinating story of survival and hope, it also paints a magnificent snapshot of life in the Southwest a half century ago. I found it captivating and hard to put down. I would not hesitate to recommend this superb book by author Janelle Meraz Hooper.

To Bring You Joy
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: Essie Summers
Average review score:

Style and cultural insights mark this romantic novel!
The author delights us with her tour of that little bit of France in New Zealand, the Banks Peninsula. Combining romance, adventure and independence, Ms Summers takes her heroine on a journey across the world to trace her roots and clear her grandfather's name of a long ago disgrace. The author writes romances in a wonderfully literate way, with an understanding and appreciation for literary style and grace.

Truly, a romance author that writes romance, not sex!
To Bring You Joy is one of Essie Summers best. She takes a girl on the brink of a new life, then adds a knight in shining armor who whirls into her life, takes it by storm, and disappears, only to reappear in another place and other circumstances, flaming mad at her! What happens and how they work it out is heart-warming and romantic. A feel-good book.

Vermont Life Stories: Memories of Summer Living in the Green Mountain State

This will stir up your own memories!
I read this book little by little. I wanted to savor every story that this author shared. I have been to Vermont and it has many wonderful memories for me too. This beautiful state has so much to offer. My favorite part of the book was the section of family remembrances of early years. I recommend this book to all nature lovers, family oriented people, and those who love New England especially the Green Mountains of Vermont and Lake Champain.

Joy in Living
Vermont Life Stories....is a delightful offering of memories of years past and ongoing happenings of the present in Vermont. Margaret spent the summer vacations of her youth, along with her family, in various camps on Long Point, North Ferrisburg, Vermont. Her dad was a Presbyterian minister and took his family of six to Vermont most summers. Many experiences of being out on Lake Camplain, trout fishing in the beautiful, rushing mountain streams, picnics, hiking, mountain climbing - Camel's Hump is a favorite, as well as card games, reading and get togethers with friends made over the years. Margaret takes you all over the New England area, reminiscing and revisiting favorite spots with her three sisters, sometimes all together when they have their Berger Girls reunion every two years, and sometimes with only one sister at a time over the years!
Then Margaret and her husband, Whitney Doane Morse, were privileged to buy their own camp and enjoy continued pleasure in Vermont with its beautiful fall foliage and snow covered mountains. Whitney keeps the camp and lot beautitul and in good repair. Margaret does gardening, putting local flora in a rock garden setting, remembering her Dad's rock gardens. There are outings in her Boston Whaler purchased with funds left toher by her mother. When her sisters visit, they are usually out on the lake revisiting Kingsland Park, The Dean's Islands also known as The Three Sisters and the Little Otter River to name a few.
And so the stories continue to come. The book truly is delightful, spiritual, uplifting - filled with love of God and family and God's awesome creation - our world, especially Vermont. Margaret has shared her thought and feeling and her generous nature with all of us. READ THIS BOOK! You will be enriched!

Premiere guide to Boston dining
The only thing better than the outstanding art design of this up and coming guide to dining in Boston and Cambridge is in fact the restaurants chosen for this delightful publication. All of Boston's favorite restaurants are featured, with map, menus, and a picture of the dining room included. Restaurants are grouped by location, which is helpful when you have an area of town in mind. All in all I place its value up there with my Zagat's guide to dining in Boston, and find that these two publications compliment each other nicely.

When you're stuck, this book really helps out!
I bought this book in the middle of a book buying spree. Unsureat first, it is now an essential part of my dining guidecollection. My girlfriend and I use it quite often. The sidebars with sample menus and other tidbits of important information like hours and dress code are really helpful. I've discovered many new restaurants with this guide. Highly recommended if you live in or around Boston, and even if you plan on visiting the city for vacation. Thanks for the great dining publication!

The White Horse Talisman (The Summer of Magic Quartet, 1)
Published in Hardcover by Orca Book Publishers (February, 2002)
Author: Andrea Spalding
Average review score:

Great Fantasy Book
The White Horse Talisman By Andrea Spalding is a great fantasy book. It is about Chantel and her brother Adam who go to Britain from Canada to their cousins Owen and Holly. Chantel, Adam, Owen and Holly have to help the White Horse, Equus, find his mate the red horse and foal. Equus is one of the wise ones. He can talk to Chantal in her mind since Chantal believes in horse magic.
Adam gets jealous of Chantel thanks to the honey-tongued dragon Worm. My favorite character is Equus because he's a good character and he's magical. He runs on the wind and can go through time. I wish I could do those things.
My least favourite character is Worm. He is evil and tricks people with his words that sound kind but are evil like Adam. Worm tells Adam, 'That's good, let your anger fuel my dragon magic. Watch the light.' Worm gets Adam to do his bad deeds by talking to him and making him angry and also using spells.
My favourite scene is when Equus and Worm fight. They move very fast, fire blazing, hooves flashing, claws slashing and tails lashing. The dragon flies up and Equus races after him, collides and it ended.
If you want to find out who wins in the battle between Equus and Worm and if Equus finds his mate and foal, you should read The White Horse Talisman.

The White Horse Talisman
To disagree with the editorial reviews, I LOVED 'The White Horse Talisman', especially the way the characters seemed so real and the setting so inviting. I read a lot of fantasy, and this book was a great example of a wonderful fantasy story. Ms. Spalding put a lot of thought and research into her book, making it very interesting and an unforgettable adventure. If you liked THE DARK IS RISING you will LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!!

Yesteryear's Child: Golden Days and Summer Nights
Published in Paperback by Heritage West Books (01 May, 1993)
Author: Phoebe L. Westwood
Average review score:

Great Read
This book was great for info about the days gone by! If ever you wondered how they dealt with things then, this is perfect. I especially liked it because it took place where I live, Oroville California. ( a very small town.... )

Snapshot of a girl growing up in a small town 100 years ago.
This is abook well worth reading. It is about how life 100 years ago in small California town affected a girl who grew up from 1896-1914 when she left home to attend the University of California, Berkeley to major in science. Phoebe Westwood was a second generation Californian. Her family were basically English/Scottish.

The author talks about various subjects, food, work week for women, health, femanine hygiene, education, and much more.

In this book the voice of the young girl is never lost.

Yesteryear's Child is now on the suggested reading list for California schools in California History.

A must read for anyone interested in a woman's point of view about life 100 years ago.

You Can't Go Back, Exactly
Published in Hardcover by Time Being Books (September, 1989)
Author: Louis Daniel Brodsky
Average review score:

Beautiful poetry about timeless places and people
Despite the title, Brodsky's work does take us back, back to the feel and joy of a youth spent in the North Woods and the places where youth ought to be spent. Great reading for those who just want to revel in the beauty of words descibing beautiful ideas.

This book is critical to any Nebagamon lover's library, alongside such works as Willy Stern's "There's an Old Southern Saying" and Brad Herzog's "States of Mind."

10
Great book, great memories, especially for anyone who's ever spent a summer in the North Woods. If the words "Sawbill," "Muggs Lorber" or "Upper Diamond" mean something to you, you'll find yourself reading these poems again and again.

The 30-Minute Cook: The Best of the World's Quick Cooking

Authors: Nigel Slater, Kevin Summers, and Juliet Dallas-Conte
Average review score:

The best cookery writer alive today!
I have all of Nigel Slater's books and they are my most used cookery books out of a collection of hundreds. He is really funny (if your sense of humour understands Two Fat Ladies) and I enjoy browsing through them for light entertainment. The food is fresh, tasty, fast and easy. His pudding book is a revelation if you need to make something fast and are a nonpudding maker who usually relies on fruit! Suitable for anyone - amateur to professional.
